It is a matter of great satisfaction for us that many students particularly those preparing for the I.A.S, and other competitive examinations and some Professors of History have sent us letters of appreciation about our analysis of the currents and cross-currents of modern Indian History and have sent suggestions about addition of some recent developmentsMany students preparing for the I.A.S. examination have written to us the need to include in the book a more detailed analysis about the contents of the paper entitled 'General Studies' which is a compulsory paper both in the Preliminary and Final Examinations. Many of our present day problems-communalism, politically-loaded casteism, regional chauvinism, reservation system with fixed Quotas in Legislative Assemblies, Government services and even professional colleges for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and O.B.C.-have their roots in the policies followed by the British imperial rulers during the two centuries of their administration in India. Our economic backwardness, mass illiteracy, distorted modernization are also a legacy of the colonial past. Even sixty one years after independence, we are haunted by the same problems, even made mode intricate by the short-sighted politicking of our power-hungry politicians. British colonial rule has ended in India but neo-colonialism (in the form of economic globalization) has gripped the Asian and African countries. The compulsion of the defence needs, the urge for technological advances and modernization still make us dependent on the USA and colonial powers of yester-years. The Western nations are still the pace-makers in defence weaponry, techniques of economic development and even modern fashions. Yester-years we were slaves of Western imperialism, today we are the victimes of neo-imperialism. Undoubtedly, we are politically free, but are slavish imitators of Western models.
